Spring in Twin Peaks

May 22,  2011
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On our way out to look for the horses...the weather was suppose
to be bad...but it turns out to be a very nice day....
The baby geese that we saw last weekend are growing....
There is so much water this year...more than I have seen in a long time
The yellow headed black bird as happy as us to see spring arrive
Going out Hwy. 395..we see two horses not far off from the highway ....
a first for us in this area..
this would be on the South side of Observation mt.
The Buckskin is beautiful...he is so fat and sleek
The dark horse looks as if she may be carrying a baby...
What a beauty....
The wild flowers are already pretty..
My favorite time of the year
Thunder heads are building, but its warm  out...
Not far into the Dodge Rd.. we find this guy..a young stallion
Not a very clear picture...but a small family..
This family didn't stay around...there was a big black..I think a  stallion
by his physical structure..but I was unable to get a picture of him.
Beautiful lupins
Northern side of Observation...
We haven't had many warm sunny days, and already the grass is growing.
The road started getting pretty slick and  muddy so we turned around...
On the way back ran right into these three stallions crossing the road....
They were awesome..and not very afraid......no mares to protect so
they had fun blowing and prancing around....strutting their stuff
So pretty....
Oh he was just the "king Daddy"....
These guys just would not leave...
Finally I bid them farewell...hope I see them again sometime...
We went back out and took the Buck Horn Byway...so sad as
there just isn't the horse's there like there use to be....
Once again, driving clear across Buckhorn Byway...we saw nothing
until we got almost to the end of it...I could see a spot of color so
knew that even though I had some hiking to do..it was going to be worth it
if I could get close enough...
This little guy jumped out right beside me and scared me to death...
The color I thought I had spotted from the road was there...
so tiny and oh so beautiful....!
I was loving this .....
The white and gray were both stallions, and it was strange to me that
neither one seemed to care that the other was close to the mare..
He had many scares from battles...
As if to say it was time to leave...she turned and said good bye..
One last look..and over the top they went...out of sight.
Hopefully I will get to see them again someday...
The bands of sheep already moving in to feed..the grass will be
wiped out before it can even  get a chance to grow...
Mother nature at its best in the high desert
After seeing the paint baby..we turned around and
headed back across the Byway.
This time at Sob Lake...we find horses.  These two stallions and then
clear across on the back side on the lake we could see 5 more...
The treasure of the day...and not far from Buckhorn Res.
What a family this was....
Proudly standing looking over his family...I noticed the large scar
on his shoulder...whatever it was from, and it was an awful cut at one time.
I have seen lots of families...this is one of the prettiest I have ever seen..
Thank God they somehow escaped the roundup last year.
Lunch time for the baby....
Soon to be Mom
This was a great family to sit quietly and watch...they slowly traveled on
grazing....I really hope I can find them again.
End to a perfect day..We saw a total of 39 horses this day.....
  1. You are a great photographer. I really like horses-mustangs, thoroughbreds, and Arabians in particular. I even have a horse blog of my own.
